Competition entry for the expansion of Breite School in Muttenz.
The gymnasium, despite its larger footprint, is embedded into the terrain beneath the other floors. To provide a flexible yet non-directional structure, the gym halls are rotated by 13 degrees. This shift displaces the vertical structural grid from the façade and divides the plan into three longitudinal strips. The corners of the above-ground volume each rest on the outer walls of the gym halls. The interplay between the subterranean and above-ground volumes defines the building’s structure and shapes the spatial experience, particularly in the corner classrooms and the meandering corridor zone.
